Unfortunately our fourth amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure have not been updated for the modern world filled with technology. Recently, police often have been seizing and searching through a suspect's personal phone or other electronic device at the scene of a crime. As such, police are able to read through a suspect's emails and obtain vast amounts of personal information without retrieving a warrant.
This needs to change! The bill proposed by Rep. Zoe Lofgren would require the police to obtain a warrant before reading user's emails in most circumstances.
