On behalf of the African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation, founded by Dr. Frank Smith in 1992, we would like to draw attention to the needs of the African American Civil War Memorial, located on historic U Street in our nation's capital. The memorial needs extensive repairs and maintenance, and national attention would greatly help our mission to recognize the 209,145 soldiers that enlisted in the United States Colored Troops in the Civil War.
