Our constitution was written based on opinions of the 18th century when it was believed that individuals should have the right to bear arms as a check against governmental tyranny. As society’s thinking evolved, the constitution has been amended to end slavery and enable women to vote. Advances in technology have made private ownership of guns an ineffective check on the government. The unintended consequence of widespread gun ownership is over thirty thousand gun deaths per year. Recently the Supreme Court has ruled that the second amendment supersedes local gun control regulation. The second amendment is obsolete and causes great harm to society; it should be repealed and representative federal, state, and local governments should be empowered to regulate gun ownership.
