As a safer and more efficient alternative to both uranium based nuclear energy and fossil fuels such as coal fire power plants, it would be highly beneficial to the American people, and the world, if the Administration would support research into Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor (LFTR) technology. In the 1960s uranium was chosen by the DOE as the fuel for our nuclear reactors because the byproduct of using uranium was a good source of weapons grade nuclear material. We no longer have that requirement for the choice in what energy source that we need to invest in as a nation. Thorium is abundant on earth and has 200 times more energy potential than uranium. We will run out of fossil fuels, but the estimates are that we will never run out of Thorium.
