Millions of taxpayer dollars are being spent to deport people who contribute to the U.S. as workers, consumers, taxpayers - and as the parents, spouses, valued colleagues and friends of U.S. citizens. It is both fiscally unsound and contrary to the tradition of the U.S. as a nation of immigrants to pursue an enforcement only immigration policy. The Obama administration should enact immigration reform comprising 1. an expansive DREAM program for people who were brought to the U.S. as children, 2. an earned pathway to Lawful Permanent Residence for qualified immigrants who currently do not have status, 3. reduce the long waits for visa numbers that force families to choose between violating immigration law or enduring years of family separation.
