On 20 June 1863, the western counties of Virginia were admitted to the United States as the State of West Virginia. However, this was only after they illegally and illegitimately seceded from Virginia without Virginia's consent; paradoxically, they did this as a protest against Virginia's vote to secede from the United States. Not only was this action illegitimate, but West Virginians would benefit from reunification with their Virginia brethren after annexation. Life expectancy and income per capita for West Virginia are both 49th out of 50; for Virginia, these figures are 25th and 7th, respectively. Countless other measures of development also support the same conclusion. Therefore, we, the undersigned, ask President Obama to support Virginia's inherent right to annex West Virginia.
