Survivor Benefit Plan Update

Created by P.T. on November 16, 2016

An option for a military veteran upon his retirement is to elect into an annuity plan known as the Survivor Benefit Plan. It allows the retiree to have a portion of his retirement upon his death continue to go their spouse. If a retiree gets divorced and remarried there is a provision where the former spouse rates all of the annuity upon the death of the retiree and the current spouse rates nothing. Legislation needs to be introduced that would allow the death benefits to be divided among the former spouse and current spouse upon the veteran's death as the retiree elects.
