The NCAA forbids players and institutions from benefitting financially from the athletic successes of individual players or their likenesses.
In the past few years, the NCAA has aggressively enforced these amateurism rules in disciplining programs and individual players for doing just that.
However, the NCAA does not follow these same rules itself however and has no qualms about profiting directly from these players, many of whom have been punished, through suspensions, loss of eligibility, and even up to loss of national awards. The NCAA has instead been selling memorabilia from these players for profit, after successfully eliminating the competition in the name of protecting the amateur status of their mega million dollar cash cow.
