The draft has not been used since 1973, and today's professional military does not have the capacity to integrate draftees even if a draft was re-instituted. President Carter restarted the practice of registration through executive order in 1980 after the Soviet Invasion of Aghanistan. It can be ended with an executive order as well and save $24 million a year. We are not fighting the Cold War any longer, and our military has changed vastly in 34 years. Let's end this outdated policy. If America is threatened in the future, registration could be restarted just as easily. In the meantime, let's put our thin budget to better use.
