High fructose syrup is one of the most common ingredients in packaged goods, even though it is proven to be detrimental to a person's health. I propose that the federal government implements either a nationwide or a state law that would increase the markup of products with high fructose syrup significantly and will markdown the prices on fresh produce. This could be done by implementing a 35% minimum markup and markdown that supermarkets must follow in order to stay in business. That way it would be harder for impoverished people to obtain unhealthy products, and easier to obtain fresh produce. People with low incomes would be forced to rely on fresh produce for food instead of products with high fructose corn syrup because produce would be more affordable.
