The current system of voting in the United States is First Past The Post. Under this system the party that receives the highest percentage of votes, will win the election (Or in the case of the Electoral College, they'll win that state.)

With a modified Borda count, voters rank their preferences and points are assigned. If four canidates run in FPTP, a canidate can be liked by 26%, but absolutely hated by 74% and still win. With Modified Borda Count, a canidate that is disliked by a majority of people can't win.
Because of this, Modified Borda Count gives a fair chance to other parties, and ensures that the winning canidate is not hated by many voters.
