Last spring, I participated in the SOD Blitz that took place around Northern California to help monitor the spread of Sudden Oak Death Syndrome. With the obtained results, it became truly apparent that this serious exotic disease is rapidly spreading and threatening the survival of several native oak species. Currently, infected California Bay Laurels are known to be the primary vector of SOD. We need to take action as soon as possible to begin to manage and control SOD through way of sanitation, chemical preventative treatments, and bay removal to protect the future of the oaks. As these treatments are only effective if implemented before oak infection, the government needs to intervene immediately.
