Take Cost-of-Living into account on Income-Based Repayment (IBR) Plans for Federal Student Loans

Created by A.A. on May 05, 2014

Thousands of us have student loan debt; loan default is a way of life for many, because there is no other choice.

The Income-Based Repayment Plan (IBR) only takes your income into consideration, not anything else, like cost-of-living.

Scenario: my income is $43,000/yr. In Monterey, CA (where my job is) the cost-of-living is 40% above and the cost of housing is 68% above the national average, but none of these things are taken into consideration when it comes time determine monthly payments on a student loan. The government has decided to assess what I can afford by looking only at my income and not considering other expenses.

I need you, as someone who cares about education, and a country where everyone has the ability to get the education they want, to support a change in policy.
