Mostly influenced by the Cuban Communist Model, they have put in place disastrous economic policies for which Venezuelans are facing constant shortages of food and personal hygiene products, forcing them to spend hours in lines when they are available. Other problems are galopant corruption, persecution of opposition party members, political prisoners, tortures, deplorable public services, monopolization of the media and strong censorship, provision of weapons to paramilitary groups, and financing of terrorist activities in other countries in the region.
