The United States of America is a republic, i.e. a representative democracy. On the surface, it even resembles one. However, in practice, it is not. We vote our "representatives" into office, but once they're in office, they serve different masters.
Much public policy is shaped by lobbying organizations who spend hordes of money on political campaigns. The Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission allows corporations and individuals to funnel unlimited, and undisclosed, amounts of money into political campaigns. It has been demonstrated time and time again that spending as much as, or more than, one's opponents is critical to the success of a political campaign.
We call on the Administration to champion campaign finance reform over the next four years.
