The Kremlin announced June 30th, 2013 that President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a draconian measure banning so-called "gay propaganda." The law, which was passed unanimously by the State and approved by the Senate, is modeled on a similar piece of legislation passed last year in the city of St. Petersburg. It outlaws any kind of public expression of LGBT identity, LGBT pride and or support for the LGBT community. Already there have been deaths attributed to this law. Many countries will have openly gay athletes and attendees at the 2014 winter games and this new law applies to anyone who shows support for the LGBT. They will risk being arrested and detained for up to 10 days. The United States should do everything in its power to have the Winter Olympics moved to another site.
