The US space programs are too risk adverse and include unrealistic expectations for the safety of astronauts. The safety requirements should be reduced such that the US is able to more quickly innovate and push toward exploration and colonization of space. We are loosing our lead over countries such as China. We need to be honest with ourselves and expect that astronauts will die in order for us to reach our goals for colonization of space.
