We implore the Obama Administration and the federal legislature to take non-partisan and pro-active steps to mitigate the effects of gun violence in America. Nearly 30,000 American lives are lost to gun violence each year—a number far higher than in any other developed country. Two to three times that many suffer non-fatal injuries. Since 1963, more Americans died by gunfire than perished in combat in the whole of the 20th century (statistics cited in Private Guns, Public Health, University of Michigan Press, 2004). Gun violence is a national emergency that law enforcement agencies cannot fight alone. They need community partners, public support, and elected officials willing to act in the public interest to reduce the terrible, and escalating, risk of gun violence in America.
