It costs taxpayers almost 2.5 cents for every new penny minted. Carrying around pennies makes little sense as they are not accepted in vending machines, toll booths, parking meters, and pay phones. Pennies also slow down business and create longer lines. In short, the penny has become impractical to use as currency.
