Despite the recognition of the importance of breastfeeding in improving women and infant health, breastfeeding rates in Black communities continue to be the lowest of any demographic group.
We are writing to ask that the Executive, through the Department of Health and Human Services, take concrete steps to increase rates of breastfeeding among Black women. These concrete steps are:
Increase incentives for hospitals in urban areas to become Baby Friendly certified.
Increase allocation for ‘It’s Only Natural’ campaign.
Require states to expand Medicaid coverage for lactation.
Increase availability of prenatal lactation education classes.
Develop a breastfeeding education curriculum for women who have been abused.
