The Japanese Government continues to hunt whales in the Southern, and other Oceans, in pursuit of what it calls "scientific research."
The number of whales hunted and killed, is far in excess of any scientific requirement for research, and there is clear proof most whale products end up on the retail markets in Japan, for consumption by citizens who value such commodities, despite falling demand and calls for and end to the trade from within Japan itself.
Changing environmental conditions around the world are changing the whales environment and, the added pressure of population decline through intentional hunting, is placing different whale species under added pressure, which is threatening the survival of whales which, in many cases have only just returned from the brink of extinction.
