The people of Southern Illinois, defined as living south of Springfield, Illinois for the purpose of this petition, are not represented properly due to the fact that the city of Chicago dominates the political system in Illinois. For the past several election cycles, the people of Southern Illinois have overwhelmingly voted differently than what national results would indicate for Illinois. Due to the population density of Cook County, a national candidate can easily carry the entire state of Illinois by winning this county, and little else. This causes the views and opinions of Southern Illinois citizens to be ignored by most national candidates. For this reason, Southern Illinois should be allowed to separate itself, form its own state, and enjoy proper representation.
