Dear Mr. Obama,
In creating a country that is founded on equality for all, we need to ensure that our system of justice is fair for all citizens of our great nation.
When corporations can imprison citizens for profit, this creates a private desire to criminalize our fellow citizens. This hurts our economy and treats our neighbors in an unjust manner. These citizens could go on to have a much greater impact on our country. Instead, they are treated as instruments for profit. We need to ensure that prisoners are treated in a manner that is respective to their crime and reflect our values as a nation.
A prison system that does not incentivize profit will help spur our economy and reflect the true values of our great nation.
