The tragedy in Newtown demands specific proposals intent on preventing similar events from occurring in the future. The CDC National Violent Death Reporting System collects, organizes, and reports on all violent deaths in the eighteen states in which it has been implemented. This information set can be used to study the underlying causes of violent episodes, particularly those leading to the death of one or more of the participants. Registries such as these have been used by the automobile industry to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety resulting in safer automobiles, highways and cities. We must demand that our policies with regards to firearms are based not on rhetoric but on objective and accurate data. This proposal aims at meeting that need, for the sake of our children.
