Americans are weary of the proliferation of gun violence and mass killings such as Columbine, Sandy Hook, and many more. There is no reasonable need, other than military, for assault weapons. Let those who want them pay a premium for them in the form of an annual federal tax for assault weapons. The annual tax would serve as a deterrent thereby reducing the want and number of weapons, and by extension, decreasing the likelihood of another mass shooting. The tax is within the realm of presidential powers and would neutralize the power and influence of powerful gun lobbyist groups such as the NRA.
