Over 60 million packs of cigarettes are sold in the US daily.
Over 36 million gallons of soda are sold in the US daily.
McDonald's sales are over $100 million daily.
I'm picking on McDonalds because they do the most sales daily, but they are actually ahead of most fast food restaurants in terms of healthy menu choices. I'm including ALL "bad food" items sold at fast food restaurants as well as all of the chips, cookies, ice cream, candy, etc. sold at grocery and convenience stores. Most importantly, the two biggest contributors to heart disease and obesity in this country, respectively, are cigarettes and soda.
Adding just $1 tax on these items-which are what contribute most to health care costs- would raise almost a billion dollars a day to fund health care and discourage consumption.
