Preferential tax treatment for investors over wage-earners has led to the largest accumulation of wealth by the top 0.1% of capital holders in history. Meanwhile, the ease of moving capital from one investment to another caused by these low tax rates has led to a focus on riskier short-term speculation instead of stable long-term investments, a move which the recent financial crisis and stalled recovery has shown is unsustainable. Increasing the capital gains tax would also result in increased government revenues, allowing us to begin to pay down the national debt.
