Religions control vast wealth and generate significant revenues. Yet though the Constitution calls for separation of church and state, tax-empt religions demonstrate symbiosis instead. Were these institutions treated as both their adherents and critics are, the 'fiscal cliff' would crumble and funds for education, health care, infrastructure, and social and artistic programs would become plentiful. What's more, the roughly 40% of 'unaffiliated' Americans; the 10% - 20% who are gay, lesbian, or transgender; and the majority that favors contraception, abortion, and co-habitation would no longer be forced to underwrite, through higher tax bills, the very institutions that oppose them. It's time for clerics to get off their high horses and pay their fair share!
