Imagine the empty, deserted stores in your mall being used by local middle/high school students to grow healthy, organic food that they can take home and use to feed their families. This could provide a low cost nutritional supplement for low income, struggling families, or can even be donated to those in need. The idea is to repurpose or rebuild unused spaces into "green spaces," spaces that can support modest indoor food farms, while teaching students basic agriculture skills and plant biology. These grow farms may become centers for CSA (community supported agriculture) initiatives, while simultaeneously giving students hands on educational experience. This new self-sufficiency would give students an incentive to learn and attend class, and teach them to lead healthier, smarter lives.
