SpaceX is developing a very powerful rocket that will be ready next year. This rocket is cheaper and more powerful than the Space Launch System (SLS) will be. The United Launch Alliance (a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Boeing) is proposing a large rocket as well. At this point, it does not make financial sense for NASA to develop the smaller, less powerful, and more expensive SLS.
