Why do we have to pay so much to the IRS? In part it is because they are GIVING AWAY so much of our money to thieves. In 2014 thieves stole BILLIONS from the IRS by filing fraudulent returns using stolen social security numbers. Tax ID fraud was the NUMBER ONE complaint to the FTC, up 2300% from 2013. This hole in the boat wastes taxpayer money and creates a rapidly growing incentive for identity thieves.
The problem is well known by the IRS, the crime is way too easy, and the solution is painfully simple: STOP issuing refunds to untraceable accounts. That's it. When the IRS gives out refund money, they should at least be able to find out who they gave it to. Refunds sent to anonymous destinations like debit cards provide no way to track down the thieves, so STOP doing it already.
