Rahm Emmanuel's plans for the Obama College Preparatory School will have it built where Stanton Park currently sits. Stanton Park is the last green space left in the Cabrini-Green neighborhood, which has been subject to redevelopment by the Chicago Housing Authority for the past 20 years.
Cabrini-Green already fails to meet Chicago's own Housing standards by falling short of having 2 acres of public open space per 1,000 residents, and building over Stanton Park would make this problem worse.
We support the concept and mission of this school. But we wish it would not be built in place of the only green space the Cabrini-Green community has left.
