Two of the country’s largest pork producers – Smithfield Farms and Tyson Foods – have just announced they want to get rid of gestation crates, small narrow stalls used to confine mother pigs on factory farms. More than 60 major food providers, including Walmart competitors like Costco and Target, have already committed to getting rid of pork from gestation crates. Yet Walmart continues to buy from farms that use these inherently cruel crates.
Imagine spending years crammed in a barren metal crate so small you can’t even turn around. Imagine having nothing to lie on but cold concrete, night after night, for your entire life. We don’t even treat prisoners this way, but Walmart continues to condone this type of cruel treatment of innocent pigs in its pork supply chain.
Please outlaw this.
