Approximately 1 in 5 young adults in America suffers from some form of mental illness. Although prevalent, society still holds inaccurate assumptions and stereotypes about mental illness. Although there are many causes to the stigma, the lack of education is the most relevant cause of societal misunderstanding and stigma of mental health. The creation of programs that provide mental health education to young adults will make the young adults more sensitive to the topic, providing a better environment that encourages appropriate help-seeking and open discussions about problems. Students will be more open to discussing their feelings and listening to others when needed. People who suffer from a mental illness deserve to be supported, not stigmatized.
