The Selective Service System is an archaic relic that unfairly discriminates against young American men. The world has changed considerably since the end of the Cold War and it's time rethink this issue. During the Vietnam War, the US government witnessed the negative consequences of forcing unwilling men to fight in a war they did not believe in. If a draft was ever instated in the future, the results would be similar. Unfortunately, in 1981 the Supreme Court felt that it is ok to treat men and women differently.
Instead of forcing young men to register for this draft system, the US should rely exclusively on volunteers to meet its military needs. It is about time that the US stopped trying to force people into involuntary servitude and started treating both sexes equally.
