There is another energy alternative that seems to be completely missing from the public discourse. thorium-based nuclear energy is said to be far safer than current nuclear designs while producing less potent radioactive wastes in far smaller quantities. In addition, these reactors operate at low pressures. That means there is no chance for explosions. When these reactors fail, they simply stop. They don't start a runaway process that can only end in disaster like traditional reactor designs. On top of that, thorium waste products can be used in medicines, but cannot be used in bombs. Thorium is also cheap and abundant. It is considered a waste product in many mining operations, including RE element bearing minerals that would otherwise be commercially non-viable. it's US-dev technology.
