Recently it has become apparent that NASA needs funding to fuel it's project, as well as few other organizations.
Organizations that make advancements in technology require more attention. Not only can they help us answer the fundamental questions of the universe (such as is there alien life), but they can help develop a whole assortment of technologies. Ranging from basic advancements to aid our daily lives (example; the television remote) to weapons technologies.
There is no end to what they could find on their technological journeys. And so far the only thing slowing them down is money. Look at how much they've accomplished in the past 5 years. With proper funding they could have figured all of that out in 1-2 years.
