Despite its selling of itself as the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel routinely violates the civil rights of its Palestinian minority and Israeli political dissidents on the political left. It does so in order to maintain an ethnocratic system that gives power and privileges to Israelis and all Jews seeking to emigrate to Israel, while denying the same to these minorities. The United States should use its considerable power and unique position as one of Israel's staunchest allies to demand that Israel shore up its weak adherence to the rule of law within its own borders, and if Israel continues to refuse, it should face consequences, the very least of which should be reduction in military aid.
