The federal minimum wage was last changed to $7.25 in 2009. Working 40 hours a week brings in $14,500 annually, well below the poverty level for a family in most states. Though some states have instituted "higher" minimum wages, there are a majority of states that haven't done so, leaving their population in or teetering towards poverty. Workers entering the workforce should expect a minimum wage that reflects that time, not some time past.
Thereby I recommend the federal government implement an annual review of the minimun wage and adjust it in alignment with the Cost of Living Allowances for that given year. This method would ensure workers would be paid a respectable wage for the year they enter a new job, and not a wage established many years ago.
