Many people assume that they will never be at risk to the dangers of alcohol. Few realize, however, that alcohol impairs the consumer's ability to regulate his or her drinking after the first drink. In addition, many people incorrectly judge their current extent of intoxication, leading to auto accidents. College students may feel safe, yet the part of their brain that controls judgment is not fully developed. Everyone, even non-drinkers, will be put in danger by those who do drink.
The part of the limbic system that controls judgment typically completes growth in the mid-20s. Raising the drinking age to 25 will protect society from alcohol.
