In FY 2013, the USA spent approx. $756 billion on Defense, including $79 billion in Research and Development. The USA has become the most technologically advanced military in the world by out-spending the next 10 biggest militaries in the world combined. Maintaining our existing military is important to world security and economy, but further weapons development is unnecessary.
In FY 2013, the USA spent approx. $16.9 billion on NASA. This number continues to drop, causing program cancellations. Since NASA is mostly a research organization, most of its research benefits the general public (some studies show an economic benefit of $10 for each $1 spent in NASA).
Let's take 5% of defense R&D budget (approx $38 billion) and personnel, and transfer them to NASA. This would triple NASA's budget.
