The United States is one of the few countries left in the world that has not officially adopted the Metric system. The US stubbornly clings to the outdated Imperial System of measurements. Switching to the Metric system will allow Americans to become more scientifically literate, allow them to easily relate to units of measure in foreign countries, and create a more intuitive way of measuring distance, mass, and temperature that is easily comparable with the rest of the world.
There is a lot of inertia built-in to American society and infrastructure that prevents this, so the shift to the Metric system should be done over the course of a generation with specific milestones set every few years. It should start with educating children in school, and then rolling out slowly to industry.
