Treat Detained Immigrants Humanely: Stop Inhumane Treatment in "Hieleras" or "Iceboxes"

Created by B.M. on June 05, 2016

Thousands of immigrants are detained in detention centers(hieleras) every year; 31,000 people at any given time, 233 in a given center. 31% of these people are children. 10.9% are held for over 72 hours, the legal limit, 67% are not given sufficient food, and 78% are exposed to extreme temperatures. Children are separated from their parents. Reports include “when we arrived at the hielera, the CBP officers threw [my son]s medicine away, and said it was prohibited.”(This was referring to the child's asthma medication) and “CBP ignored my requests. They told me and women with sick kids ‘this isn't a hospital.’" as well as "While we were in the hielera there was virtually nothing to eat. I was given a piece of bread but my son was not given anything." We need to treat these people humanely.
