The U.S. could provide a tuition-free public college education to all citizens who wish to attend, by enacting a small national sales tax to raise $30B annually.
That figure represents approximately 0.0075% (3/4 of 1%) of the U.S. budget. It is the sum of student tuition payments (non-loan), federal student loan payments and federal grants.
If each state continues to fund their own public universities at current levels, all other tuition costs could be completely covered by a 1.25% national sales tax.
That means students would graduate debt-free, thereby strengthening families and freeing up money to be spent locally.
