One reason that Social Security is in trouble is that Congress keeps taking money from the Social Security Trust Fund to use for other things. The Federal Government currently owes our Trust Fund $2.7 trillion. Another huge reason that Social Security and Medicare are in trouble is that there is an income cap, above which taxes are not paid. For 2012, the limit is $110,100. No matter how much money you make, you only pay 7.65% on the first $110,100, after that, nothing. If the limit were eliminated, and all income was subject to withholding, that change alone would make Social Security solvent for the next 75 years. First, Congress needs to stop borrowing from our trust fund for other purposes, and repay the $2.7 trillion owed. Second, eliminate the income cap for withholding.
