Unilaterally reduce our nuclear arsenal to ~1000 warheads

Created by M.P. on July 07, 2013

By unilaterally reducing our nuclear arsenal from ~1,550 warheads to 1000, America can strengthen its stance on the denuclearization of other countries. Recently Mr. Obama made the proposal that the US and Russia mutually reduce their respective nuclear arsenals to 1000 warheads each. However, there is no need to wrangle with Russia in order to reduce our arsenal. 1000 warheads is more than enough for any conceivable conflict. Every warhead we maintain costs us money. Furthermore, by unilaterally taking action, the US can reaffirm its commitment to reducing the amount of nuclear weapons around the world, and put ourselves in a stronger position when it comes to negotiations with and sanctions on countries like Iran and North Korea.
