Unsolicited interference by the US in the internal workings of sovereign governments has caused great harm. It is counter to the values of democracy to engage in this behavior as a nation. The Prime Directive, as articulated by the United Federation of Planets, limits interference with sovereign governments without their consent. Therefore, the United States will create and follow a foreign policy consistent with the Prime Directive in spirit and in law. Star Trek is a vision of an optimistic future where humans have solved many of the problems that plague us now, at the beginning of the 21st century. It is worthy of emulation, and so therefore integrating the Prime Directive into our foreign policy is the first step in creating a better future for all of humanity.
