The USPS is being bankrupted by a 2006 congressional mandate that legally bound the USPS on September 30 to make billions in payments toward pre-funding its Postal Service Retiree Health Benefit Fund to 75 years within 10 years. No other corporation or agency is required to pre-fund benefits at such an onerous level. The only explanation for this rule to even exist is due to lobbying from the USPS competitors UPS and FedEx. It should be repealed.
Further, the postal service should not be required to service particular areas or deliver on Saturday. It should be allowed to determine what areas to service when on its own to ensure its own well being.
We want Obama to take this issue publicly and help save the USPS.
