In 1975, more than 65% of salaried workers earned time-and-a-half for every hour worked over 40 hours per week, because their income fell under the Department of Labor's mandatory overtime threshold of $23,660. Unfortunately, this threshold has not been updated in decades, and in 2013 only 11% of salaried workers qualified for overtime pay. An equivalent threshold in 2014 would be over $70,000.
We petition the President and his administration, along with the Department of Labor, to adjust the mandatory overtime threshold. Raise it to $70,000 or another suitable value, and provide for yearly updates to keep pace with inflation. This requires no congressional approval, only a presidential signature.
