Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act currently allows websites to host illegally obtained content because it was written with the fear that too much moderation of websites would stifle the spread and free speech of the internet. Clearly this is no longer a concern, but now allows for people to post any content they wish, including private, stolen content such as nude photos and videos. This is giving a free avenue for criminals to spread their crimes. Websites currently have no reason to take this sort of content down since they run no legal risk. The U.S. Congress has an obligation to protect the American people from violations of their rights to property ownership and privacy, and should update Section 230 so that stolen content may easily and swiftly be taken down.
